"VICTORY IN IRAQ DAY" - November 22, 2008

We sleep at night, safe in our homes, because of American and coalition forces in Iraq and elsewhere across the globe. Afghanistan! Your next.

To each of you, and your families - we owe an undying debt of gratitude.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.

Basil says,

"What we do in life echoes in eternity." It's only a line from a movie, but the sentiment strikes me right. Scoundrels will attempt to re-write the history of America's effort in Iraq for political gain. Soldiers, airmen, sailors and marines know the truth. So do their families. We have a victory. Patriots will complain that the victory is unrecognized. Then let the stars bear witness. No mortal man can erase a victory written in the heavens. The stars know, and they have very long memories.

Mortality is either a curse or a blessing depending on your perspective. I think the stars envy mankind. We ignite for a brief moment before we expire into anonymity like fireflys in the face of a sudden chill. The stars are left to record our deeds. Celestial bodies suffer the curse of longevity. I pity them. I would rather be a man.

Today I give thanks to the many who have served, not only our nation, but for those who have gone to distant lands to spread the lessons of liberty. And a victory for freedom it most certainly is, recorded in the stars. Let the stars be envious of men.
